New Review For Movie Mesrine: Part 1 (Killer Instinct) and Part 2 (Public Enemy #1)

Everything about the second half is snappier, especially the acting...
Joshua Rothkopf-Time Out New York

Cassel injects a jolt of wild energy and ambiguity into what could easily have been another flatulent, apologist gangster epic.
David Jenkins-Time Out

It's so killer, it makes Part 1 seem like nothing but a flesh wound.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

A French crime-gangster film of epic proportions
Emanuel Levy-EmanuelLevy.Com

Together, these two films represent a thinking-man's gangster movie. They contain the self-reflection and real-life grit, but without ponderous self-indulgence.
Mike Edwards-What Culture

A restless character study in which an otherwise unremarkable individual, tossed by the tides of fate, emerges unexpectedly as remarkable, but in all the wrong ways
Wade Major-Boxoffice Magazine

a fascinating true-life story that suffers only from trying too hard to be completely true to life.
Todd Gilchrist-Cinematical

French actor Vincent Cassel, as Mesrine, delivers in spades.
Beverly Berning-culturevulture.net

vi%u0161e nego dobar primjer gangsterskog filma
Dragan Antulov-Draxblog Movie Reviews

Mesrine is a lean, flashy, fast-moving, somewhat repetitive film, very French in some ways, yet lacking the gravitas of the crime movies starring Jean Gabin or directed by Jean-Pierre Melville.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Richet's punchy style doesn't add anything new to the conventional, Scorsese-inspired way of presenting gangster movies, but it's well done, giving the film a constant supply of energy.
Edward Porter-Sunday Times (UK)

A film that doesn't necessarily glamorise its subject, though it does seems worryingly enamoured by his achievements. This is ultimately closer to a slice of over-board entertainment than an insight into a despicable, if extraordinary man.
Jim Hall-Film4

Muscular, forthright storytelling, hard-smoking, hard-drinking action, horribly incorrect attitudes, brutality with a top-note of self-loathing, bushy moustaches and a cracking lead performance.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Killer Instinct and Public Enemy can't escape the shadow of the films they might have been. Both earn their place in the gangster canon. But not even Jacques Mesrine can escape the constraints of cinema.
Matt Bochenski-Little White Lies

A shotgun blast of a crime thriller; a dizzying, violent, and terrifying thrill ride.
Rob Daniel-Sky Movies

Though it touches on some wider issues, Mesrine really just wants to be a classy, exciting genre movie. In this it succeeds perfectly.
Matt Bielby-Filmstar Magazine

Cassel's Jacques Mesrine is pieced together from gritty shards of believability, a street-real mosaic no one tries to smooth and polish. For that reason he and it have the sharp edges and septic menace of life.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

There's an inevitable air of unfinished business hanging over this first instalment, though it moves at a tidy lick and conjures an atmosphere rank with Gauloises and greed.
Anthony Quinn-Independent

Cassel surely deserves Oscar and Bafta consideration for a level of acting that dominates every frame of an exceptional thriller that easily surpasses any recent American efforts in this genre.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

With a riveting performance by Cassel at the centre, it's definitely worth seeing, even if it never really gets beneath the skin.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

For his new film master director Patricio Guzmán, famed for his political documentaries (THE BATTLE OF CHILE, THE PINOCHET CASE), travels 10,000 feet above sea level to the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert, where atop the mountains astronomers from all over the world gather to observe the stars. The sky is so translucent that it allows them to see right to the boundaries of the universe. The Atacama is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact: those of Pre-Columbian mummies; 19th century explorers and miners; and the remains of political prisoners, "disappeared" by the Chilean army after the military coup of September, 1973 So while astronomers examine the most distant and oldest galaxies, at the foot of the mountains, women, surviving relatives of the disappeared whose bodies were dumped here, search, even after twenty-five years, for the remains of their loved ones, to reclaim their families' histories. Melding the celestial quest of the astronomers and the earthly one of the women, NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT is a gorgeous, moving, and deeply personal odyssey..--(c) Icarus

New Review For Movie Nostalgia for the Light

A truly eye-opening experience.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

A nearly unbearable examination of good and bad in the human heart.
Mark Feeney-Boston Globe

Guzmán offers a poetic narrative that celebrates the searches and insists on the moral obligation to remember Chile's not-too-distant past.
Walter V. Addiego-San Francisco Chronicle

The filmmaker's masterpiece, an exquisitely filmed, poetically written meditation on how past and present fuse in humanity's most unresolved questions.
Ann Hornaday-Washington Post

A film of rare visual poetry that's simultaneously personal, political and philosophical, it's a genuine art film that's also unpretentious and easygoing.
Kenneth Turan-Los Angeles Times

"I am convinced that memory has gravitational force," says Guzmán in conclusion. "Nostalgia" states his case so beautifully that even skeptical physicists will be thoroughly convinced.
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

The vast expanse of the world's driest place - captured here in all its arid intensity - makes for a fascinating and eerie backdrop.
Martin Roberts-Fan The Fire

Patricio Guzman returns to the subject of his masterpiece.
Tony McKibbin-The List

This is a film to be seen, re-seen and pondered.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

A seriously remarkable documentary-essay from the Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

A remarkably lyrical, strikingly beautiful documentary reflecting on memory, mortality and the inexorable passing of time.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

This is one of the films of the year.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

You wait all year for a thought-provoking movie-essay on life, art, science or history. Then in Nostalgia for the Light all four arrive together.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Sticking in the mind, Nostalgia for the Light leaves much food for thought on life's important questions.
Carmen Gray-Little White Lies

Pasts both collective and personal are thoughtfully examined in Patricio Guzmán's ethereal documentary.
Shaun Munro-What Culture

A fascinating and insightful documentary combining philosophical theories with personal tragedies that's beautifully directed and magnificent to watch.
Jennifer Tate-ViewLondon

A truly insightful art film that still manages to be easy-going and unpretentious.
David Parkinson-Empire Magazine

A film that makes you ponder the mysteries of human existence anew.
Tom Dawson-Total Film

Not just a phenomenal human story - which was guaranteed from the moment Guzmán chose his subject - but a gripping work of cinema as well.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

A soul-searching meditation on the past.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

...an almost perfect documentary, confronting history, memory, and science in a way that touches the heart, provokes the mind, and humbles the spirit.
Jeff Meyers-Metro Times (Detroit, MI)

In this poetic - though overstated - documentary, Patricio Guzmán ponders these two ways of looking back in time, merging the celestial and sublunary like Terrence Malick in The Tree of Life or Werner Herzog in Cave of Forgotten Dreams.
Peter Keough-Boston Phoenix

Original music, sure-handed editing, the stunning panorama and scope of the observatories, the desert and the night sky, plus the heartbreaking stories of the searchers, make this a top contender for best documentary.
Robin Clifford-Reeling Reviews

...a provocative work, a documentary that doesn't merely present facts but induces its audience to connect ideas.

The sprawling slum that towers over Rio de Janeiro is one of the most dangerous places on Earth, and as the head of Rio's BOPE (Special Police Operations Battalion), Captain Nascimento (Wagner Moura) has seen his share of intense situations. When a BOPE mission to stop a jail riot ends in violence, Nascimento finds his job on the line--and BOPE accused of a massacre by human rights activists. But a public fed up with the violence and gangs that plague Rio loves it, and Nascimento finds himself embraced as a hero who gets results. With elections around the corner, he's promoted to Sub-Secretary of Intelligence. In his powerful new post, Nascimento strengthens BOPE and brings the drug gangs that run the slum to their knees-- only to come to the sobering realization that by doing so, he's only made things easier for the corrupt cops and dirty politicians who are truly running the game. New Review For Movie Elite Squad: The Enemy Within

The pace is quick, the violence is rough, and the visual style is documentary as Padilha hammers home his point: Someone is forever in the pocket of someone else as The System constantly adapts to protect itself.
Lisa Schwarzbaum-Entertainment Weekly

When this Enemy Within settles into key action sequences, such as a stunning nighttime ambush or a daytime battle against Fabio, it becomes wildly entertaining.
Robert Koehler-Variety

Throttles forward with remarkable aplomb and easily leaves the original in the dust.
William Goss-Film.com

Elite Squad is just urgent and complex enough to make it clear violence is more than a matter for academic debate.
Liam Lacey-Globe and Mail

A fast-paced, hard-hitting Brazilian police thriller.
Stephen Farber-Hollywood Reporter

Jammed with cliches but completely engrossing.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

The entire last half hour is just incredibly disingenuous.
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky-Ebert Presents At The Movies

Padilha's film offers no easy answers, but the title is a tip off as to where at least his sympathies lie.
Marc Savlov-Austin Chronicle

A film that grabs you by the shirtfront and rarely lets up its grip.
Shawn Levy-Oregonian

The Enemy Within, it's not just the cops and robbers who are corrupt and greedy and barbarous, but also politicians and media representatives. The "system" is everywhere.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

Even if it's not as smart as it supposes itself to be, [the film] is still smart enough to be more than a decent way to waste time.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

An epic crime drama from Rio de Janeiro with a thrilling pace and an over-the-top body count.
Liz Braun-Jam! Movies

Hard-hitting Brazilian thriller about police corruption, politics and crime colliding in Rio's favelas and corridors of power and law enforcement is as intelligent as it is entertaining.
Doris Toumarkine-Film Journal International

Moving to its own throbbing beat, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within offers an exhilaratingly bleak vision of what it describes as "an articulation of loathsome interests," in which the well-meaning suffer...

British filmmaker Mike Leigh delivers another emotionally honest portrait of ordinary people trying to make sense of their lives in this comedy drama. Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen) are a couple who are drifting past middle age into their sixties; he's a geologist and she's a psychotherapist. Tom and Gerri have a stable and happy marriage and a grown son, Joe (Oliver Maltman), an activist lawyer who hasn't settled down yet, much to his mother's chagrin. One of Gerri's co-workers and close friends is Mary (Lesley Manville), who puts up a facade of desperate good cheer despite the fact she's been very lonely since her husband left her and has been drowning her anxieties in wine. Gerri has unsuccessfully tried to fix Mary up with Tom's sloppy but good natured pal Ken (Peter Wight), and she's startled when Mary begins openly flirting with Joe, more than 20 years her junior. Mary's troubles only grow worse when she stops by Tom and Gerri's place only to be introduced to Katie (Karina Fernandez), Joe's new girlfriend. Another Year received its world premiere at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

New Review For Movie Another Year

See it at your own risk -- but don't miss it.
Rafer Guzman-Newsday

This humane movie is an ode to joy, albeit of the mature sort.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Desperation and fulfillment, anxiety and warmth, pain and contentment -- all come together in the darkly splendid Another Year.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Mike Leigh's films are one of a kind.
Peter Travers-Rolling Stone

Another marvel of perfectly drawn, fully realized characters created from the ground up and brought to aching and glorious life.
Chris Vognar-Dallas Morning News

It all comes down to affirmation vs. denial. Leigh chooses affirmation. And the result is life-affirming.
Carrie Rickey-Philadelphia Inquirer

It's not the most focused Leigh movie, but plot has never been his strong suit.
Roger Moore-Movie Nation

Leigh sculpts Another Year in time like Edgar Degas painted a picture.
Dan Jardine-Cinemania

Mike Leigh is often dumped in the dour, 'kitchen sink' genre of British filmmaking, but that is to overlook his wily sense of humor.
Stella Papamichael-Digital Spy

Leigh creates a fascinating diorama in which life-long and contented couple Tom and Gerri sit in sympathy and in judgement on the lonely friends that orbit them.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Brilliantly acted and unafraid of pain, Mike Leigh's latest takes us to uncomfortable places
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

A masterful exploration of aging, family bonds, strength and loneliness. As with all his films, Leigh has reflected both the joy and the struggle of living a real life.
Andrew Hedley-Flicks.co.nz

Mike Leigh is a master of bringing awkward characters to life and making them sympathetic.
Grae Drake-Movies.com

What's great about this alternately cozy and depressing domestic drama from Mike Leigh is how matter-of-fact it is.
Dave White-Movies.com

Actors will tell you that Leigh's method gives their characters a hinterland. Why is it, then, that they so often look to me like exaggerated caricatures?
Jason Best-Movie Talk

A small symphony of maddening looks and recoils, simmering with Ozuisms and a coziness that couldn't be more confronting.
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

Endearing family drama, offering generous dollops of Ozu-like wisdom for dealing with the mundane.

A ghostwriter stumbles onto a secret that places his life in danger as he takes down the life story of a former U.K. prime minister in this Roman Polanski-helmed adaptation of the Robert Harris novel. Convinced by his agent that he's been granted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, talented British screenwriter "The Ghost" (Ewan McGregor) agrees to aid British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan) in completing his memoirs after the leader's former aide dies under mysterious circumstances. Almost immediately after The Ghost arrives at a remote mansion in the U.S. to begin working with the prime minister, Lang is accused of committing a war crime by a former British cabinet minister. Amidst a deluge of protestors and reporters, The Ghost delves into the unfinished manuscript and comes to the terrifying conclusion that his predecessor died because he discovered a link between Prime Minister Lang and the CIA. The more information The Ghost uncovers, the more convinced he becomes that his life could be in danger as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

New Review For Movie The Ghost Writer

Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer': Cosmpolitan Composition
Joe Baltake-Passionate Moviegoer

The thread of black humour that runs throughout the film compensates for its occasional moments of madness. It's a film just silly enough to be taken deadly seriously.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

The result is a political thriller refreshingly long on grown-up dialogue yet lamentably shy on, well, thrills. This chatty thing does go on.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

The swirl of visual poetry, political intrigue and personal zeal that Polanski creates gets under your skin and brings an icy hand up your back. This is moviemaking.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Polanski is in total command of his medium, something that hasn't been a sure thing since the 1970s, The Pianist notwithstanding.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

So elegant, so deliciously scary, so masterfully controlled that you feel tingles of bliss even as your skin crawls.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

In the total context of Polanski's hard life and grim ordeals ... The Ghost Writer constitutes a miracle of artistic and psychological resilience.
Andrew Sarris-Film Comment Magazine

It's a slow build that hints at something big from the beginning but unravels nicely throughout.
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

The Ghost Writer is tense, unsettling and deeply thrilling because of the way a master filmmaker looks at the world.
Richard T. Jameson-Parallax View

Polanski's a master of carefully drawing you in that cold gray place where everything is wrong, no one sleeps well and secrets are hidden from the hapless main character until it's too late for anyone to make it out with their lives or souls intact.
Dave White-Movies.com

For all of it's mirroring of real life circumstances, The Ghost Writer's shrouded revelations are ever transitory.
Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema

The great thing about Brosnan's performance is that his character's shadow looms over the entire film, yet Brosnan never resorts to chewing the scenery or becoming a Blair charicature.
Matt Neal-The Standard

Polanski's skills are obvious in his compositions and patience, and a nervous energy hovers over much of the picture...yet I consistently felt disengaged, like the pacing was mismanaged.
Gabe Leibowitz-Film and Felt

I would not put the narrative conceit The Ghost Writer perpetrates in its final moments past a doped up high school sophomore in a screenwriting elective.
Jordan Hiller-Bangitout.com

An often-tense affair that comes with just the right amount of cynicism, a great cast, and one that treats the audience with a modicum of intelligence.
Steve Newall-Flicks.co.nz

Polanski at near the top of his form
Brandon Judell-CultureCatch

Polanski does an excellent job evoking an increasing sense of paranoia and danger.
Thomas Caldwell-Cinema Autopsy

The Greyscale Adventures Of Tony Blair: SuperSpy (as I call it) is a deliberately directed, well acted and classy treatment of a plot that is so balls-out ridiculous I firmly believe the writer wears a tin-foil hat.
Marc Fennell-Channel 10 Australia

Polanski grinds the gears to entertaining effect, never losing pace from beginning to end, while not necessarily offering anything new.
Jeffrey Chen-Window to the Movies

We're all entitled to our own opinions regarding his past but Polanski deserves credit as a filmmaker. The Ghost Writer proves that he's as good as ever at the age of 77.
Matthew Toomey-ABC Radio Brisbane

Polanski's master touch, his attention to framing, lighting, to every detail, and his wicked visual witticisms make it a joy for any film lover. Welcome back, Roman.
Julie Rigg-MovieTime, ABC Radio National

This effort joins the director's Frantic in the "jet-lag" category where mind and body can never quite catch up with a new, deeply problematic -- and probably dangerous -- environment.
Lisa Nesselson-sbs.com.au

[E]legant, gripping... gorgeously simple to look at yet deeply involving in its story...
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

In every respect, this is an exemplar of the art of the thriller. Directors like Polanski are a dying breed. We need more of them.
Nick Dent-Sunday Mail (Australia)

Stylish and gripping, The Ghost Writer features a master filmmaker at his very best and a story writhing in personal vendetta.
Matthew Pejkovic-Matt's Movie Reviews

Though Polanski might be a shadow of the filmmaker he once was, he still knows how to push, prod and deceive an audience every which way.

New Review For Movie Winter's Bone

Debra Granik's bleak little film is as tough, unflinching and fascinating as the characters who eke out a life amid its cold, gray hills.
Connie Ogle-Miami Herald

Granik balances the pace and intrigue of a mystery thriller with total compassion for Ree, played with much skill by Lawrence.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

This unblinking look at America's Red State Crystal Meth Belt is an instant Southern Gothic classic.
Roger Moore-Orlando Sentinel

Winter's Bone is a genuine triumph, a great movie with astounding performances so natural, so genuine, that you forget it's a movie.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

What we've been waiting for: a work of art that grabs hold and won't let go.
David Denby-New Yorker

With Winter's Bone, Granik has morphed from a director worth watching to one who demands our undivided attention. She's got mine.
Amy Biancolli-San Francisco Chronicle

Peyton Place meets Deliverance in a meth lab.
Dan Jardine-Cinemania

In moments of confrontation [Jennifer Lawrence's Ree] is as fearsome as Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, taking on monsters to protect the small and the vulnerable.
Jeffrey Overstreet-Image

Jennifer Lawrence is dazzling as the film's protagonist as she struggles to uncover the truth between her addict father's disappearance.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Winter's Bone is an absorbing and socially conscious piece of work, underwritten by the constant threat of violence.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Gritty and real...
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

Granik... proves a dab hand with the camera, capturing the starkness of the Ozarks and Ree's situation in a free-flowing and pensive way that transfers the chill of it all on to the screen.
Matt Neal-The Standard

Not having been to this part of the country, I can't say for sure whether Granik has captured it accurately. The point is that it feels genuine.
Eric D. Snider-EricDSnider.com

Granik pays deference to the curious ways of the mountain folk, rejecting the prevailing hillbilly clichés to depict people with hardy survival instincts in the grip of financial hardship and addiction.
Fiona Williams-sbs.com.au

An unflinching portrait of shabby life in the Ozarks, this powerful indie drama features an Oscar-caliber turn from Jennifer Lewis, a real discovery who's only 20, in the lead.
Emanuel Levy-EmanuelLevy.Com

Winter's Bone certainly has its redeeming qualities, particularly its cinematography and a superb lead performance by Jennifer Lawrence, but man, does it feel EMPTY until a gripping sequence near the end.
